Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration, or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), can often lead to blurry or distorted vision, as it impacts the macula. While it does not cause total blindness, it can make it challenging to recognize faces and affect your everyday activities. At Monroe Family Eyecare in Monroe, NY, we provide comprehensive eye exams and treatments to lower its progression and preserve your sight.

Types of Macular Degeneration

There are two main types of macular degeneration: dry and wet.

•             Dry Macular Degeneration: The more common type, dry macular degeneration occurs when the macula gradually thins and small deposits, called drusen, build up. It progresses slowly, often over many years, and may cause a gradual loss of central vision.

•             Wet Macular Degeneration: Less common but more severe, wet macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood. This can cause rapid and significant vision loss. Early detection and treatment are crucial for managing wet AMD.

What Causes Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a condition that typically affects those over 50, with the risk growing as people age. While the exact cause is unknown, several factors are believed to contribute to its development. A family history of the condition, high blood pressure, and obesity are all linked to an increased likelihood of developing macular degeneration. Though the condition is most common in older adults, younger individuals may also experience it, particularly if they have certain genetic factors.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Symptoms of macular degeneration can differ, but common indicators include blurry or distorted central vision, trouble recognizing faces, and difficulty seeing in dim lights. In the case of wet macular degeneration, vision loss can occur more rapidly. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to visit our optometrists for a comprehensive eye exam.

Treatment Options

While there is no cure for macular degeneration, certain treatments can help slow its progression. For dry macular degeneration, nutritional supplements containing vitamins C and E, zinc, and lutein may be beneficial. In contrast, for wet macular degeneration, our eye doctors may recommend Anti-VEGF injections, laser therapy, or photodynamic therapy. Early detection and treatment are key to managing the condition and protect your vision.
