Cataract FAQs

Many people suffer from cataracts. Cataracts cloud the natural lens of a person’s eye. They are similar to looking through a foggy window. This makes it difficult for a person with cataracts to read and even drive a car.  If you think that you may have cataracts, we can help you get the treatment you need here at Monroe Family Eyecare Associates. We have put together a list of frequently asked questions to help you gain more knowledge about cataracts.

How can I tell if I have a cataract?

If you have a cataract, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty reading
  • Double vision
  • Blurry vision
  • Dimming of vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Constant cleaning of glasses or changing them
  • Not being able to drive at night
  • Glare vision issues

Our eye doctor will be able to determine if your above symptoms are a result of cataracts. That is why it is important to receive an eye exam if you are experiencing any symptoms.

When is it necessary to have surgery to remove a cataract?

An optometrist will advise you to have surgery to remove your cataract if your blurry vision gets in the way of your daily living such as reading, sewing, watching television, driving at night, or recognizing faces. Just because you are developing a cataract, doesn’t necessarily mean you should have surgery right away. It is, however, a good option for those who need or want an improvement in their vision.

If I need to have surgery, where will it take place?

If you need to have cataract removal surgery, rest assured that it will take place on an outpatient basis. However, you need to make sure that you have made arrangements in advance for someone to drive you home after your surgery is over. It is also recommended that you rest once you get home.

Is cataract surgery serious?

Cataract surgery is still considered a surgery, even though many advances have been made over the years. Certain complications, as with all surgeries, are possible and can be serious even though they are rare. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States.
