Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Allergies

There are many different types of eye allergies, ranging from mild to severe. Most types of eye allergies are related to seasonal changes, but certain individuals might have other sensitivities that can cause eye allergies. Mild symptoms of eye allergies include redness and itching in the eyes. Other symptoms of eye allergies include excessive tearing, production of thick mucus, and aversion to light. If you are suffering from any of these conditions, we recommend you see our eye doctor. If these symptoms are left untreated, they can cause issues with your eye and vision health.

The triggers for eye allergies can be found outdoors and indoors. Some common outdoor triggers include pollen from weeds, trees, and grass, while indoor triggers can be pet dander, mold, and dust mites. In some cases, the filter of the air conditioner or heating system of your home or office might not be working properly, causing certain irritants to come indoors.

Our eye doctor  will perform an eye exam to confirm the diagnosis of your eye allergies. We can then determine what treatment is best for you. The most effective treatment of eye allergies is to reduce exposure to the triggers. Certain eye drops or ointments might help protect and treat your eye from eye allergies. Wearing sunglasses can also help reduce eye allergies caused by pollen.

Rubbing your eyes can worsen your condition, so we recommend you try not to touch your eyes. Certain over-the-counter eye drops can also worsen your eye condition by irritating your eyes or drying out your eyes. In some cases, eye allergy symptoms can be similar to symptoms of other types of eye conditions, so we recommend you visit our office for a comprehensive vision and eye health examination.
